Are you Ready for Satellite Internet

What is Satellite Internet?

Is it stable and reliable?

Does it really work?

Why choose satellite?

  • DirecWay, a division of Hughes Electronics developed a product several years ago which allowed users to receive internet connectivity utilizing a satellite dish. With the exception of high-end, non-consumer or military products, the user was required to upload, back to the Internet through a telephone line.
  • 2-WAY (SATELLITE RETURN) - A PC user today with a satellite dish no longer needs a separate telephone line. This user can now receive (download) at speeds up to 16 times greater than PC standard 56k or 28.8k modems. He or she can also transmit (upload) at two to four times their current speed while sending their data 24,000 miles out into space and back again.
  • 1-WAY (DIAL RETURN) - The term refers to dishes that can receive only. It requires a telephone line and connection to an ISP at all times while the PC is in use.
  • SPEED GUARANTEES – Firstly, regardless of the delivery method, speeds are rarely guaranteed. For example, Satellite ISP providers state, "Up to 400k download and up to 128k upload." The cable companies state the same thing, often quoting momentary "burst rates" achieved during periods of low traffic. All delivery providers manage their Bandwidth and as the number of subscribers increase, they will load balance their services, reducing the speed (without telling you) to meet the needs of their growing customer base. Broadband is generally defined as any sustained speed above 128k. For raw speed only, cable currently seems to offer a slight speed advantage over satellite dishes.
  • DSL appears to offer less speed than satellite or cable.
  • ISP - Regular improvements have been made and have not gone unnoticed by the largest Internet Service Providers (ISP). Most ISP’s are now engaged in providing new and existing customers with high-speed access, comparable directly to cable modems or DSL. Your local ISP is unlikely to market satellite products and services because of the high investment required to build the infrastructure.
  • STABILITY - Existing DirecWay users find this to be a highly stable, very reliable internet access platform for their Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. DirecWay has established a solid reputation since inception.
The first question most people ask is - how does this compare with cable modems and DSL? Certainly there are advantages and drawbacks to each. For speed only, cable currently seems to offer a slight speed advantage over satellite dishes. DSL appears to comparable speed to satellite internet.
  • CABLE - The major benefits for cable are lower installation costs (in most cases) and bursts of high speed access. Secondly, existing cable service for the entertainment (TV) reduces the cost of installation. Criticisms against cable begin with on security, customer support, and reductions in speed / Bandwidth caused by many users sharing the same cable services simultaneously. Rural services by independent cable providers will frequently overload their system contributing to poor bandwidth
  • SATELLITE - Except for a very high dollar dedicated line from the telephone company, the only alternative to getting this high-speed access is satellite. One advantage is no telephone line is required (except during activation of the dish with the original DW4000 Series). The current DW7000 / DW7700 model has many new features)
Initial hardware cost and monthly service charges can usually be justified for most users and home-based businesses. One other big strength is that while there might be a short signal loss during storms, the satellite will reconnect itself as soon as the storm passes Hardwired cable or telephone DSL services cannot do without human intervention.
  • ONLINE GAMES - When playing speed-oriented online games, satellite is not as responsive, compared to a hardwired connection. This is due to the split second delay due to satellite latency - when one sends a key stroke on a 48,000 mile round trip into outer space and back. Satellite is therefore not the best for multi-player games where skill and timing will determine victory or a loss. You will be lose the game(s) to opponents on a Non-Satellite connection.
  • DSL - Is provided by your local the telephone company. High-speed access is achieved providing you are within three miles of the phone company's local main switching office or stations. Longer distances will result in a degradation of speed or bandwidth.
  • SUMMARY - Cable may offer better speeds / Bandwidth for users in a non-congested areas. Comparatively, DSL has far many limitations and potential issues. For the majority of remote users or users who are in metropolitan areas not serviced by Cable or DSL, Satellite is often both the best and the preferred option.
